People laid siege to a station house in Assam’s Hailakandi district and assailed the authorities and security forces with stones on Saturday over rumours of the death of a believed burglar due to supposed abuse by fire brigade workers, authorities stated.

Police and security forces break tear gas shells and turned to lathi-charge after some workers, consisting of senior authorities main Kulendra Nath Deka, sustained injuries in the stone-pelting, they stated.

Tension emerged after rumours spread out that a found guilty, detained by the individuals for supposedly taking a cellphone and Rs 25,000 in money from a fire brigade workers and turned over to the authorities on Thursday, passed away at a healthcare facility due to supposed abuse by fire brigade workers, a law enforcement officer stated.

The implicated, on the other hand, was launched after the authorities protected a bond from him, he stated.

Some of the implicated then initiated the general public to lay siege to the station house at Basic Road in Hailakandi town, the officer stated.

Fire Station Officer Albert I Khobung declared that fire brigade workers were not associated with beating the implicated which an FIR will be lodged over the event.

Four fire brigade workers have actually been “gotten” for interrogation, Mr Deka stated.
