Water stage at Mullaperiyar reservoir reaches 136 ft

The water stage at Mullaperiyar reservoir in Idukki district of Kerala reached 136 ft late Sunday evening, officers stated.

The Idukki district collector held discussions with the collector of Theni in neighbouring Tamil Nadu, with regard to the discharge of water by means of the tunnel to Vaigai dam.

The Kerala authorities had on Saturday requested the Tamil Nadu authorities to launch water from Mullaperiyar by means of the tunnel to Vaigai Dam in a phased method when the water stage reaches 136 ft in view of heavy rains in Idukki.

“The water stage has reached 136 ft. I’ve talked to the Theni collector. No resolution has been made as of now with regard to opening of the shutters. They’ve assured us that we’ll be told previous to opening,” Idukki district collector H Dineshan advised PTI.

He stated the district administration has made all preparations to shift the folks in case of any emergency.

In a letter, Kerala Chief Secretary Vishwas Mehta had requested his Tamil Nadu counterpart to tell the state authorities, 24 hours previous to opening of the shutters.

“The state is receiving heavy rains particularly within the Idukki district. The water stage within the catchment space of Mullaperiyar has been steadily rising. The water stage, which was at 116.20 ft on August 3, reached 131.25 ft by 2 pm on August 7,” Mehta stated in his letter.

He additionally identified that the MeT workplace has issued a purple alert for Saturday and Sunday within the district, indicating excessive heavy rainfall. He stated presently the influx to the dam is 13,257 cusecs of water and the outflow by means of the tunnel is 1,650 cusecs.

Within the letter despatched to Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary Ok Shanmugam, Mehta had stated that as per data offered by the Government Engineer of MI Division at Kattappana, the excess shutters of Tamil Nadu-controlled Periyar dam have been able to releasing 1,22,000 cusecs of water.

“We all know the extent of harm when 23,000 cusecs of water have been launched in 2018. Therefore, vital steps must be taken to launch water in a phased method,” he had added.

Based on data offered by the Idukki district administration, the water stage at Mullaperiyar at 10 pm on August 9 was 136 ft.
